Last month, Microsoft announced that there was a "significant" step for the update that will allow you to collaborate with your co-workers on Excel, in real-time.
If you have used Google Docs or Excel Online, you may know what it is like to work on the same document with another. This update will allow several workers at once to view, edit and append an Excel spreadsheet from their OneDrive at the same time. This will eliminate the need for continues saving and reopening/refreshing before edits. The update should be a smooth transition with no downtime and no changes to the layout of Excel or it's menus. At the moment, Microsoft has revealed that this update will currently only be available for PC users but a Mac version is being worked on. If you are an Office 365 subscriber and also a member of the Microsoft Office Insider Program you may have already used collaboration or co-authoring on a Window's phone, android or iOS device. If you want to gain access to this update as soon as possible then you will need to make sure you're part of the Microsoft Office Insider program. By signing up you agree to use, in development updates and software as a test for Microsoft. Any issues and/or bugs found can also be reported back to Microsoft to be fixed with any new update. To use this update when it is released to the public you will need an active Office 365 licence and Office 365 installed on your machines. OneDrive will allow both you and a colleague to save to the same location from the cloud and load the same documents even if you do not have them saved locally. Excel co-authoring will only work on the very latest version of Office 365 when it is released, so be sure to update your software whenever you can.
